Facebook in the news!

2 minute read

Over the past few days there have been a few Facebook related stories in the news which have caught our attention…

Firstly, The Telegraph has reported that Lady Gaga has become the first person to have 10 million Facebook fans – beating the likes of Barack Obama and Britney Spears. Amazingly, the pop star gains on average 140,000 new fans everyday! Back in February, Mashable told us that more than 100,000 people on Facebook declared a “National Lady Gaga Day” which perhaps contributed to this milestone number of fans? From a business point of view, we think this could be a great way of boosting fan numbers.

Secondly, on Friday Facebook told us that they’re “helping newcomers connect to interests” by suggesting pages to new users. When someone joins Facebook step two is now to add interests, second to finding friends. At Sign-Up.to we think this will help new users build upon their page and connect with people/businesses with similar interests – which could help businesses target people more effectively!

Finally Mashable have reported that Facebook has begun testing face detection technology for Facebook photos. Currently it is fairly quick and easy to manually tag people in Facebook photos, but the process becomes more intensive when tagging whole albums or photos of large groups of people. The new technology will detect faces in photos and suggest tags, hopefully only requiring confirmation at the end of the process.

What do you think of these news stories? How long do you think Lady Gaga can stay top of the Facebook fan chart? Will Facebook’s similar interests or face detection technology help your business? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below!
