In designing and building our recently-released form builder we faced some tough challenges at Sign-Up.to. Web usage trends are shifting ever further towards mobile devices and tablets. It was therefore essential for us to ensure that not only the form builder, but also the forms it produced, were accessible on as many different kinds of device as possible.
Most web sites are not optimised for mobile devices. As you have probably found, browsing them on tiny screens can be a frustrating business. We wanted to make sure that your potential subscribers have the best possible experience, so it was extremely important to make sure that our forms look fantastic and work perfectly no matter how they are used.
We built the “themes” available in our form builder using CSS media queries. This means that the design of the form can adapt to the size of the screen on which it is being displayed. Additionally we made sure the forms work perfectly and look beautiful even when inserted into a small iframe, so they are great for embedding on your homepage.
The design of the form builder itself presented more challenges. Every single button, switch and tab had to be reviewed to ensure it was just as easy to use on your tablet as your 27″ Apple Cinema Display! Every element of the form builder shifts and responds to the size of your screen and we’ve ensured that every control can be used with a touch screen as easily as with a mouse.
Through a series of usability studies (we roped in everyone from the work experience kid to the CEO’s wife) we gradually filed away all the rough edges, creating the easiest to use form creation system we could. So no matter what device you or your subscribers are using, everyone gets the best possible experience.
