We have just added Twitter integration to your Sign-Up.to account. I imagine that statement has had rather a Marmite effect, so let’s first deal with what Twitter is, and how you can make use of it.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 bytes in length. Updates are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them.
Traditional marketing techniques don’t always apply to social networking, because the message style is so different. We tend to think in terms of one-to-many communication: TV, radio, email, SMS, posters etc. Yet by doing so we miss perhaps the most important advertising of all: recommendation.
Twitter allows anyone in the world to have a direct insight into the thoughts of anyone else who uses it. Stephen Fry and Barack Obama are probably the highest profile Twitter users, but if you want to know what a company is up to, you could do a lot worse than to follow them on Twitter.
Sign-Up.to is on Twitter. If we’ve got a service interruption, a new idea to consider, a new feature or blog post to shout about, we will tweet about it. We will also tweet links to relevant permission marketing articles, and just generally let you know how we’re getting on in the office. If you’re interested in us, you will follow us.
This is classic permission marketing. We can’t force our message on you, but we can strive to make our story interesting and useful, so that you will follow us. Then comes the great part: if you do follow us and you do find it useful, you will probably tell your friends. That’s where one-to-many just became many-to-many, and the real action starts.
So how does Sign-Up.to’s Twitter integration work?
To begin you need to associate your Twitter account with your Sign-Up.to account – here’s our manual page on the matter. If you’re a real Twitter nut and have more than one account we can accomodate that too, but for now I’ll work on the basis that you’ve got just one Twitter account.
Hopefully you’ve got a good Twitter following. So when you broadcast an email newsletter, you probably want your followers to know about it straight away. Once Sign-Up.to knows about your Twitter account this is nice and straight forward. When building your campaign, you can now choose to Twitter it.
This means that the first time you send this campaign, it will also be tweeted with your own custom message, ensuring that your loyal followers hear your message first. You’ll be able to see all views as a result of this tweet in the Track section too.
Geek spot: we think this is cool functionality. If you don’t, we think that you soon will: Twitter is on the rise. Also, note we’ve got the domain twi.to for our short URLs. We think that’s cool too!
