The weekend has finally arrived, and it’s time to report on our top five news stories this week.

1. Scotland decides to stay

Today, we all heard the news that reassured us of Scotland’s wish to stay as a United Kingdom. Record numbers of Scottish voters cast their votes yesterday, proving that the referendum was one of the most engaging events in politics for many years. With the results in from all 32 council areas, the “No” side won with 2,001,926 votes over 1,617,989 for “Yes”. From the moment the polls opened at 7am on Thursday, until 7am on Friday, Twitter users sent 2,603,497 tweets!

2. Burberry prevails in social channels during LFW

British luxury fashion brand Burberry’s digital strategy pays off as the brand dominated the social media channels throughout London Fashion Week. According to Socialbakers’s data, the British brand was top of the charts in terms of fan growth on Facebook, follower growth on Instagram and follower growth on Twitter, while Topshop saw similar trends.

3. Npower UK’s worst company for customer service

According to consumer group Which? Npower fell one place to 100th in the annual customer service rankings for the UK’s 100 biggest brands, with its rival ScottishPower in 99th. Both companies have claimed that the transition to new computer systems has created problems for them, which they argue has led to customers complaining of missing or wildly inaccurate bills.

4. Instagram introduces adverts

Instagram announced that adverts would slowly be rolled out into user’s news feeds. The site revealed it would expand its advert proposition in the UK following a US trial, with trials in Canada and Australia to follow soon. According to Instagram they will only run adverts that are engaging and feel “natural in people’s feeds”. Watch this space.
