When using the Sign-Up.to email editor you will have noticed that there are a number of pre-built templates available. Of course you can go ‘free-style’ and use components to build your new layout from first principles every time, but like me you’ll probably find that the existing templates are a useful starting point.
But what if you want to create your own template?
Hot off the press, here’s a new addition to the email editor – the ability to save a campaign as a template so it can easily be reused.
Firstly, this feature is intentionally only available to account administrators or those to whom rights have been given. This restriction allows the main admin manager of the Sign-Up.to account to create and manage templates that other sub-users can then access and use.
Like most things in Sign-Up.to it’s easy to do.
Go to the ‘Create’ section and open the email editor. From there you can select a starting layout and then use themes, components and images, to design your template. Once your template design is finished you’ll see the new option to ‘save as a template’.
When you save you’ll see that each section has ‘unlocked’ and ‘locked’ options. This allows you to control which aspects of the template your users can change (that is, edit or duplicate), and which are hardwired by default into the design. For example, you may want sections of the body of your template available to be adapted or duplicated but other areas like logos and branded headers or footers to be sacred. Changing the locked/unlocked status of each section after saving is intentionally restricted so we’d recommend that locking and unlocking the desired sections is your last step, once everything else is finished.
On saving you can name your template and add a brief description to help guide your future template users as to its intended use. Once it’s saved your new template will automatically appear in the template library, alongside the others, each time the email editor is opened. You, or your sub-users, can then select and use it as the basis for creating new campaigns in the future. It’s that simple.
A couple of things to note.
Each time you save a campaign as a template a new generation of the template will be created. This is so that you don’t accidentally overwrite any previous template creations. For different variations of a template we’d recommend using a simple version control in your naming conversion. Adding something like v1, v2 etc to the template name should do the trick.
If you want to edit a completed template you’ll need to find the email editor assets. In the ‘Create’ pull down menu, in addition to the familiar Campaigns and Inbox Testing options you’ll now also see the option ‘Email editor assets’. As the name suggests, this is where you’ll see the assets associated with any custom templates.
However, to edit the template visually you’ll find it much easier to select and open the template from the main library and then save it as a new generation. You can then either keep or delete the previous generation as needed.
